Personal References

We do not recommend putting “References Available Upon Request” on your resume. However, you should create a reference page listing three to five individuals who would be willing to serve as personal references on your behalf. You should include their names, addresses and telephone numbers. These people should not be relatives. You should know someone for at least six months (a year or more is preferred) before deciding to use them as a reference. Never use someone as a reference without first asking for their permission! Prospective employers will be very interested to find out what your former employers will have to say about you and your work.
You can help your references help you by giving copies of your resume to them. The resume will help them write and speak more positively about you, and will supply them with current information about the position you are looking for now. With this information they can discuss how your experience and qualifications relate to the position you want. It can also help remind former employers exactly when you were employed and what your previous position was.
- Always get permission from your references in advance of using their names and alert them to the possibility of receiving a call.
- Each of your references should include a name, position or job title, organization, address, and phone number.
