Using the Start Menu in Windows
The Windows desktop is what you see when you turn on the computer. It is symbolic of a work desk with items on it that you use to accomplish tasks. These items are graphic images called icons or buttons. These represent programs or areas of the computer.

On the lower left of the screen, there is a button labeled Start. If you click it, a list of items appears above it.
Point to the item labeled Programs, and a partial list of software applications appears to the right of it. Now, slowly move the mouse over to the right and move down to the arrows at the bottom of the list. Click the down arrows and a complete list of all the programs loaded on the computer will appear. You may now point to the item you want on the menu and click on it; this will start that program.
Once the program starts, a button representing the program appears on the Taskbar at the bottom of your Windows screen. This is where you can see all the programs that are currently being used.
